Fort Lytton

Queensland’s First Line of Defence

Fort Lytton was built in 1881 as Queensland’s first line of defence. It has a typical nineteenth century design; pentagonal shaped fortresses concealed behind grassy embankments and surrounded by a moat.

Fort Lytton remains the only moated fort in Australia. One hundred and twenty-three years on, it is still standing and available for exploration!

The Fort Lytton museum is a comprehensive display of Queensland’s military and social history, from 1879 through to the 1950′s.

The reason many people don’t know of its existence is, ironically, that the fort was built to be invisible. It is an ideal setting for any group function, we also conduct tours of the fort “in role” as characters who were the ‘Defenders of the Past’.
